This free sight word worksheet generator creates printable practice pages for any list of words you enter. It runs in your web browser, so nothing is uploaded, and no account or sign-up is needed. Each word gets its own block with tracing, writing, finding and circling, and optional building, coloring, or sentence activities. You can print the sheets or save them as a PDF. The tool is useful for teachers, tutors, and parents who want a few words practiced in a clear, repeatable format.

The default list is the, and, said and was; replace it with any words, one per line, and each word gets its own half or full page.

How to use the Sight Word Worksheet Generator

  1. Type or paste your words into the Sight words (one per line) box. Commas also work. The box starts with four example words: the, and, said, was.
  2. Tick the activities you want for every word. Trace it, Write it, and Find and circle it are on by default. You can also tick Build it in letter boxes, Color it (outline letters), or Write a sentence.
  3. Choose a Line size: Large, 3/4 inch (K–1st), Medium, 5/8 inch (1st–2nd), or Small, 1/2 inch (2nd–3rd).
  4. Choose Words per page: One word per page or Two words per page (half sheets).
  5. Check the sheet preview, which updates as you change settings. Tick Show descender line for words with g, j, p, q, or y. Leave Answer key for find and circle on for a teacher copy, or turn it off for children to take home.
  6. Pick a paper size, US Letter or A4, then press Print or save as PDF.

The page address stores your settings, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same sheet. New worksheet makes a different sheet with the same settings, and Reset settings restores the defaults.

Choose the line size to match the paper the child usually writes on.

What are sight words, with examples?

Sight words are common words that readers should recognize instantly, without stopping to sound them out. Many of the most frequent ones, such as the, and, said, and was, are hard to decode because their spelling does not match the sounds they make. Other examples include I, you, they, what, and come.

Reading lessons use these lists because the same words appear again and again in early books. When a child knows them by sight, reading becomes faster and takes less effort, which leaves more attention for the meaning of the text.

How does a sight word worksheet work?

A sight word worksheet gives a child several chances to see, say, and write one word in a single sitting. Each word gets its own block, and each activity approaches the word from a different angle. Keep the list short. Children learn more from seeing the same few words in many places than from meeting many words once.

A good order for each word is to read it aloud first, spell it letter by letter while pointing, and then trace it while saying each letter. Saying, seeing, and writing together give the memory more to hold on to.

Many high-frequency words break the usual rules, so point out the surprising part. In said, for example, the ai does not sound like the a in cat. Ask the child to circle that part in the traced word.

The find-and-circle rows include near misses such as wsa for was and hte for the. Ask the child why each one is not the word. Noticing the difference is the skill the activity builds.

The build-it activity uses one box per letter, shaped to match the word: tall, short, or hanging letters. Matching letters to shapes draws attention to details that separate look-alike words, such as then and when.

Questions teachers and parents ask

Can I use my school's sight word list?

Yes. Paste the list your classroom or reading program uses, one word per line. Most schools follow a specific list, so use yours rather than the example words.

Which activities fit on one page?

Two words per page usually fits two or three activities. At the Small line size, Trace it, Write it, Find and circle it, and Write a sentence fit together. If your choices do not fit, a note above the sheet says so and what to change.

Which settings suit pre-K to 2nd grade?

Pre-K and kindergarten work well with Large lines, one word per page, and Trace it, Color it, and Find and circle it. Later in kindergarten, try Large lines on half sheets with Trace it, Write it, and Find and circle it. For 1st grade, use Medium lines, one word per page, and Write it, Build it, Find and circle it, and Write a sentence. For 2nd grade, use Small lines on half sheets with Build it and Write a sentence.

Is this sight word worksheet generator free?

Yes. It is free and needs no account or sign-up. Your word list stays in your browser because nothing is uploaded.

Should I include the answer key?

Keep it on for your own copy, since it lists the count for each word on a separate page after the worksheet. Turn it off if you are printing for children to take home.

What print settings should I use?

Print at 100% scale so the writing lines keep their size. For half sheets, cut along the dashed line. The gray tracing letters print best on a laser printer. On an inkjet, use normal or high quality.
