This spelling worksheet generator turns your own word list into printable spelling worksheets. Paste the words in, tick the activities you want, and the sheet on the right updates as you go. It runs in your web browser, is free, and needs no account or sign-up, and nothing you type is uploaded. You can use it to make spelling word worksheets, spelling practice worksheets, or a spelling activity sheet for home or class. Choose from writing practice, alphabetical ordering, unscrambling, missing letters, word shapes, sentence writing and a mini word search, then print on US Letter or A4 paper. The default list has ten words, so you can see a sample sheet before you change anything.
How to use the spelling worksheet generator
- Paste your weekly list into the Spelling words box, one word per line or separated by commas.
- Type a title in Title on the sheet, such as “Week 7 Spelling”. The default is Spelling Practice.
- Tick the activities you want: Write each word 3 times (rainbow writing), ABC order, Word scramble, Missing letters, Word shapes (letter boxes), Sentence writing and Mini word search. Rainbow writing, ABC order and word scramble are on by default. The others start off.
- If you tick Missing letters, choose an option under Which letters are missing: The vowels or Random letters.
- Leave Include answer key ticked if you want one, or untick it for a sheet without one.
- Check the sheet preview on the right. It updates as soon as you change a setting.
- Press Print or save as PDF when it looks right. Your browser’s print dialog can also save a PDF.
Choose US Letter or A4 as the paper size before you print. Press New worksheet to get a different sheet with the same settings; each sheet shows a short worksheet code under the buttons. Reset settings returns everything to the defaults. The page address stores your settings, so you can save or share the link to open the same sheet again.
How do I make a spelling worksheet from my word list?
Put each word in the Spelling words box, one per line or separated by commas, and the sheet prints it exactly as you typed it. Capitals, hyphens and apostrophes are kept, so “Tuesday”, “sister-in-law” and “can’t” all work.
Every activity uses the same list, so a week of practice can come from one set of words. A useful pattern for a five-day week is:
- Monday: write 3 times and word shapes, to look closely at each word.
- Tuesday: ABC order and the mini word search.
- Wednesday: missing letters with the vowels blanked.
- Thursday: scramble and sentence writing.
- Friday: a practice test on lined paper before the real one.
The activity boxes do not reshuffle each other. If you print Monday’s and Tuesday’s sheets from the same list, any activity that appears on both stays the same.
Which spelling activities can I add?
Each activity practices a different part of spelling, so you can match the sheet to the skill you are working on.
Rainbow writing gives each word a row with three writing spaces. Children use a different color for each try, which slows them down enough to look at every letter.
ABC order shows the words in a box in mixed order, with numbered lines for writing them alphabetically. Children who are just starting do best when the words begin with different letters. Once they are confident, include words that share a first letter, like boat and bowl, so they have to look at the second letter.
Word scramble shows the letters of each word in a new order. Children unscramble them and write the word.
Missing letters blanks out either the vowels or a few random letters. Blanking the vowels is a good check for vowel teams like oa, ee and ai, because children must recall the whole pattern.
Sentence writing gives a line for each word, so children use the word in a sentence.
The mini word search hides the list across and down, with the words listed beside it.
Questions teachers and parents ask
How do word shape boxes help with spelling?
Word shapes show letter boxes that mark which letters are tall, short or hang below the line. Children work out which word fits each shape, so they notice the outline of a word as well as its letters.
Does the mini word search include every word?
Yes. The puzzle hides every word from your list across and down, with the words listed beside it. It uses the same placement code as our word search maker, so each word appears exactly once in the grid.
Can I come back to the same worksheet later?
Yes. The page address stores your settings, so a bookmarked or shared link opens the same sheet again. If you want a fresh sheet with the same settings, press New worksheet instead.
Where is the answer key, and what does it cover?
The answer key prints on its own separate page after the worksheet. It covers ABC order, the scramble, missing letters, word shapes and the word search, and for missing letters it shows the full word with the missing letters underlined in bold.
Which settings suit my grade?
Kindergarten with 3 to 5 words suits Write 3 times and word shapes, and 1st grade with 5 to 10 words suits Write 3 times, missing letters (vowels) and the mini word search. Second grade (10 to 12 words) suits ABC order, scramble, missing letters and word shapes; third grade (12 to 15 words) suits ABC order, scramble and sentence writing; fourth and fifth grade (15 to 25 words) suit missing letters (random), sentence writing and ABC order.
