What this plan builds

  • See the skill in a simple example
  • Practice one strategy at a time
  • Know when to repeat or move on

Start with meaning

Before adding speed or volume, make sure the child can describe what subtraction without guessing means in a simple example.

Model, then release

Work one example aloud, solve one together, and let the child try one independently. Repeat only the step that changes.

Keep practice brief

Use a small set of well-chosen questions. Ask for one explanation so correct answers are connected to a usable strategy.

Common questions

Before you begin

How many questions are enough?

Enough to reveal a pattern, not enough to create fatigue. Five focused questions can be more useful than a full page.
